EXPO INFERNO

a film by A. John Yates

SYNOPSIS

In 2067, the Canadian government uses advanced projection technology to artificially recreate Expo 67. As a woman searches for the ghost of her grandfather, the projection catches fire.

TREATMENT

Borrowing from the aesthetics of mid-century educational and government films, Expo Inferno’s animation uses traditional filmmaking techniques. Hand painted cels will be shot undercamera on 16mm film using a multiplane camera system. Additionally, the projected Expo 67 visitors will be filmed using double exposure superimpositions, emphasizing their temporal separation as ghosts from the past. The fire will be animated using the same technique. Finally, the film culminates in an experimental sequence that uses various methods of film degradation as the projected expo burns.
